Food Help, Please...

As we draw closer to bringing the boys home, we find ourselves trying to prepare in more and more ways.

One of the ways we are trying to prepare is in the food department. Since we don't have kids, we have no idea what to feed them! So, I'd like to use this post as a sounding board from all of you out there - what do you feed a 2 1/2 year old. And if you've brought one home from Haiti, is there anything specific I should know when it comes to food?

Please, please, please share your ideas. I need ideas for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is my hope that we can come to a place where the boys eat what we eat for dinner, but I know that will take time.

I thank you in advance for helping us out!

I have no idea what your handsome Haitians will like, but my 2.5 year old boy would live on pancakes (if we'd let him). We also have lots of fruit on hand for him.

It's so exciting that you have to put some thought into this issue because it means they're finally coming home. Hooray!

I'll share Luke's menu (he'll be 2 this month).

Breakfast - some combination of the following: yogurt, Cheerios, Nutri-Grain cereal bar, fruit (small cans of peaches/pears/mixed fruit/oranges)

Lunch - usually leftovers from dinner the night before. We always have a stash of homemade chicken nuggets in the freezer if we need them. Frozen mixed veggies. Cheese.

Dinner - He eats pretty much what we eat. We don't give him real spicy stuff, but he's starting to like it more and more. We feel very strongly that we are not cooking 2 meals every night. I always make sure that there is something he likes on the table. If he tries new stuff and doesn't like it, we do the frozen nuggets.

Snacks - raisins, fruit (he LOVES grapes), Teddy Grahams, cookies. I usually keep small packages of snacks in the diaper bag or my purse for when we're out and I need to distract him!

I would think there would definitely be a transition because the boys will be used to different foods than we eat here ... at least I'm assuming. We want our kids to always be trying new things. I read something about kids needing to try a food several times before they decide they like it. We also try to make sure we're providing healthy snacks and meals. He definitely gets the occasional hot dog, though! And he loves his cookies!

I would feed them what you guys eat. They may life some of it and some they might not, but they will need to learn to eat what you eat.

My toddlers love banannas, cheerios, grillled cheese, canned fruit.

I am sure rice and beans will always be a hit. Since that is what they are used to.

Juli,

At their age, you were a mac and cheese addict!

Love,
Mom

At 2.5, Charis would eat a lot of what we did, but her favorites were mac&cheese, toasted cheese sandwiches/quesadillas, fruits and veggies (she loves broccoli!), rice, Cherrios, yogurt, goldfish crackers, jello.

Hi Juli,
I'm a nanny for a 2.5 year old and she loves pancakes and waffles for breakfast. Her parents buy the frozen kind and she eats them almost every day with a fruit.

For lunch she LOVES chicken nuggets and PB&J and I usually give her a fruit and a veggie with lunch. She also love mac n' cheese and grilled cheese.

For dinner she usually eats what her parents make for themselves.

Snacks are usually goldfish or some other type of crackers and sometimes applesauce.

Hope that helps!

We take our hotpot and make ramen every night when we are in Haiti. We mix a different vegetable in it each time and they love it. I'll probably feed them that a lot at first while we experiment with what they like.

I just saw your boys yesterday and they are good eaters!

Juli,
when I brought my little handsome Haitian home 5 yrs ago he was a picky eater. Always have rice and beans on hand. They may eat spaghetti with red sauce no meat, ramen noodles, fruit cut small-pears, peaches, bananas, applesauce, oatmeal, scrambled eggs with cheese, teddy grahams in the diaper bag are a life saver, they may not like milk so if they will eat yougart give it to them , also breyers natrual vanilla ice cream they will need the extra fat.
if they are not eating good pediasure helps until they find what they will enjoy.... let them try your food but don't get to uptight with them if they get picker, just try and remember all the changes they are going through.... hope this helps some!
God Bless,
Rose Anne
